Legality of DIY testosterone in the UK:

Anabolic steroids are a Class C controlled substance in the UK under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. There is no possession offence, which means they are effectively legal for personal use. However, it’s still illegal to possess, import, or export anabolic steroids if it’s believed you’re supplying or selling them (this includes giving them to friends).

TLDR; Testosterone is a grey area and as long as you aren’t supplying it to other people you should be fine.

Types of testosterone:

Types of testosterone available for DIY are injections, gel, and patches, and the two most commonly used for transition are testosterone cypionate or enanthate (bio identical).

Possible risks and side effects of hrt, take into account that some of these are unlikely but the risk is never 0.

Hair loss prevention:

This is a worry for a lot of FtMs so if you see early signs of hair loss make sure to treat them as soon as possible

My claim is completely anecdotal but like most males my age I developed very mild androgenic alopecia which I treated with rosemary oil, I’ve experienced significant regrowth from it and will be continuing to use it in the future (I know because I treated one side of my head and the hair regrew on that side).

Prices:

– Injections – Cheaper in the long run, usually around £70 per vial (including shipping),

lasting around 250 days, which is around 28p per day.

– Gel – hard to come by and more expensive in the long run but the effects are slower

and no use of needles, £81 per bottle lasting 45 days if you’re on 50mg which is £1.80 per day.

– Patches – I have no reliable sources for patches (as of yet), but I know some trans men who have obtained them.

Prices may vary.

Doses:

A typical dose of testosterone is 50-60mg per week. For the majority of people this will get them in the male ranges. A low dose would be 10-20mg per week, and the maximum would be 100mg.

How to administer injectable testosterone:

You will have to use needles and syringes to inject into the muscle or fat.

How to get needles and syringes:

You have the choice of going to a needle exchange, or ordering them online. I’d personally use 20 gauge needles for drawing and 25-7 for injecting.

Remember to dispose of your needles and syringes safely by using a sharps bin and handing it over to pharmacy staff or getting it picked up by your local council.

Amount you want to inject, divided by concentration of the vial = Amount to inject per dose in ml
